Most instant valuations know your registration, your age and your mileage. They do not know your specification, your service history or the state of your alloys — and those are what move the number.

An instant online valuation is a statistical average. It takes the model, the year and the mileage, looks at what similar cars have been achieving, and returns the middle of the range. It is a useful starting point and a poor finishing point.
It cannot know that you have full main-dealer history, that you specified the larger wheels, that the car has never been kerbed, or that you still have both keys and every charging cable. Nor can it know the opposite — that there is a service gap at three years and a dent in the tailgate.
Those factors do not cancel out. They decide whether you land at the top or the bottom of a range that is often two thousand pounds wide.
Roughly in order of impact for a typical car:
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Mileage against age | The single biggest lever. Well under average is worth real money; well over closes doors with mainstream buyers. |
| Service history | Full history is the difference between retail-ready and trade-only for many buyers. |
| Specification | Options that cost thousands new rarely return their cost, but the right ones widen the buyer pool considerably. |
| Cosmetic condition | Alloy kerbing, paint chips and interior wear are the most commonly used grounds for a reduction on collection. |
| MOT and tyres | A long MOT and legal tread remove immediate cost from the buyer, and they price accordingly. |
| Colour | Marginal on mainstream cars, significant on prestige — unusual specification can help or hurt. |
| Number of keys | A missing second key is a real deduction, not a technicality. |

A valuation is an opinion. An offer is a commitment from a named buyer with terms attached, and only the second one puts money in your account.
This is why we do not stop at a number. We check what buyers will actually pay for your specific car, and we tell you the conditions attached — collection, payment timing, fees, and whether that buyer has a record of honouring what it quotes.
Questions
Yes, and there is no obligation attached to it.
Close is fine to start. Where your car has an MOT history we prefill the last recorded reading, which is usually more accurate than a guess.
No. Asking what your car is worth has no effect on any agreement you hold.
The more you tell us, the tighter it gets. A registration alone gives a range; registration plus mileage, condition, history and specification gives a figure a buyer will stand behind.
Tell us about it once. We check the market and come back with the strongest price we can confirm.
