Plenty of sellers assume outstanding finance traps them with whoever will handle the paperwork. It does not. You just need to know whether the car is worth more than you owe before anyone tells you otherwise.

A large share of sellers in Wolverhampton and across the West Midlands still have finance outstanding, and it stops fewer sales than people assume.
Call your lender, or find it in your online account, and ask for a settlement figure. It is the amount required to clear the agreement today, and it is not the same as adding up your remaining payments — it usually has some interest rebated. Your right to settle early is statutory: see the GOV.UK guidance on hire purchase and conditional sale.
Settlement figures are typically valid for a set period, often around 28 days. Get a fresh one if yours has gone stale.
Put the settlement figure against the offer for the car. If the offer is higher, you are in equity — the buyer clears the finance with your lender and sends you the difference. If the settlement is higher, you are in negative equity and you would need to cover the shortfall to release the car.
Negative equity is common in the first half of a PCP term and is not a disaster. It just needs to be known in advance rather than discovered on collection day.
Under hire purchase the lender owns the vehicle until the agreement is satisfied, so the settlement has to be cleared as part of any sale — you cannot simply sell it and pay the finance off afterwards.
PCP works similarly during the term, with the added wrinkle of the balloon payment at the end. If your car is worth more than the balloon, that difference is yours and selling can capture it. If you are close to the end of the term, compare selling against simply handing the car back.
Questions
Yes. You obtain a settlement figure, and if the car is worth more than that figure the difference is yours. If it is worth less, you cover the shortfall.
When the settlement figure exceeds what the car is worth. You would need to pay the difference to clear the agreement and release the vehicle.
The buyer pays your lender directly and sends you any balance. That way the agreement is provably closed rather than left to chance.
A personal lease is different — you never own the vehicle, so it cannot be sold. Speak to the leasing company about early termination instead.
No. It affects the paperwork, not the value of the car.
