Selling a Category N car.

Category N means non-structural damage — cosmetic, electrical or mechanical. The chassis was never the issue, and buyers who understand that price it accordingly.

Often less serious than it sounds

A Category N marker can come from something as modest as cosmetic damage on an older car where the repair simply exceeded a low market value. It can equally come from significant electrical or mechanical damage.

Because the range is so broad, buyers rely on evidence. What was damaged, what was replaced, and who did the work matter more here than the category letter itself.

Where the spread comes from

Franchised dealers generally will not retail recorded cars. Independents and specialists frequently will, and there is a healthy market for well-repaired Cat N vehicles.

That structural difference in appetite is why offers on a recorded car vary far more than on an unrecorded one — and why one valuation tells you very little.

Questions

Common questions

Is Category N serious?

It varies enormously. It means the damage was not structural, but that covers everything from a scraped bumper to significant electrical damage.

How much value does Category N cost?

Less than Category S, typically, but the range between buyers is wide. Evidence of a proper repair narrows it.

Can I insure a Category N car?

Yes, though some insurers are more comfortable with recorded vehicles than others.

Will it affect the MOT?

No. The category marker is separate from roadworthiness, which the MOT assesses independently.
