Should you MOT it before selling?

If you expect it to pass, usually yes. A fresh certificate removes an unknown from the buyer and typically returns more than the test costs.

If you suspect it will fail on something expensive, no. A recorded failure is public on the MOT history, and you will have paid for the privilege of putting it there. Sell it as untested instead and let a buyer who repairs cars price the work at trade cost.

Moving a car without an MOT

Driving without a valid MOT is not permitted except in specific circumstances, notably driving to a pre-booked test — see GOV.UK on MOT rules. Practically, this is the buyer's problem: trade buyers collect on a transporter routinely, and it is not a reason for a car to be unsellable.

Tell us the car is untested and untaxed if that is the case, so collection is arranged properly rather than discovered on the day.

What it does to the offer

Less than most sellers expect, if the car is otherwise sound. Buyers deduct the likely cost of getting it through, which at trade rates is lower than you would pay retail.

Where it matters more is the uncertainty. A car with no MOT and no explanation invites a cautious number. A car with a clear account of why it lapsed gets a fairer one.

Questions

Common questions

Can I sell a car without an MOT?

Yes. Trade buyers take untested vehicles regularly and collect them on a transporter.

Should I get it tested first?

If you expect a pass, usually worth it. If you expect an expensive failure, no — the failure becomes part of the public MOT history.

Can I drive it to the buyer?

Driving without a valid MOT is not permitted other than to a pre-booked test. Collection is arranged instead.

Does no MOT mean a much lower offer?

Usually a modest deduction reflecting trade test and repair cost, rather than a dramatic one.
