How to check it

The practical method is to compare your indicated range at 100% charge against the original EPA or WLTP figure for your variant. Charge to 100% occasionally rather than habitually, note the figure, and work out the percentage.

Third-party health checks read the battery management system directly and produce a more precise figure. If you have had one done, keep the report — it is worth handing to a buyer.

What counts as normal

Some capacity loss is expected and is not a fault. The pattern is typically front-loaded: a noticeable drop in the first year or so, then a much slower decline.

What concerns buyers is degradation well outside that pattern, or evidence of heavy DC fast charging without balancing AC charging. Neither makes a car unsellable — both change which buyers are interested and at what price.

Warranty is part of the value

Tesla battery and drive unit warranties run for a set period and mileage and include a minimum capacity retention threshold. Remaining cover is worth real money to a buyer, particularly one intending to retail the car.

Check your expiry date and mileage before selling. It is a five-minute job that changes the conversation.

What it is worth in practice

A car with strong, evidenced battery health and remaining warranty is a straightforward buy for a specialist. A car with unexplained degradation and no documentation is a risk, and buyers price risk conservatively.

The gap between those two positions is frequently larger than the gap created by twenty thousand miles on the odometer.

Questions

Common questions

What is a normal degradation figure?

A modest percentage over the first few years is typical, with the steepest part happening early. Substantially more than that warrants investigation before you sell.

Does fast charging damage the battery?

Frequent DC fast charging as the only charging method is generally regarded as harder on a pack than routine AC charging. Buyers may ask about your charging habits.

Can a degraded battery be replaced under warranty?

Where capacity falls below the retention threshold within the warranty period and mileage, yes. Check your specific terms.
