Should you sell your EV now, or wait?

Five questions that actually decide it

  • How much battery warranty remains? Cover is worth real money to a buyer. Selling before it runs low protects that value.
  • Where are you in the finance agreement? Equity usually builds through a term. Selling deep in negative equity is expensive; selling near the end may be pointless if a hand-back is simpler.
  • Is your variant scarce or plentiful right now? Scarce variants hold up; common ones compete against each other.
  • What is depreciation costing per month? Put an actual number on it rather than a feeling.
  • Is a major service or tyre change due? Spending money immediately before selling rarely returns its cost.

The trap in waiting

Waiting for a recovery is a strategy only if you have a specific reason to expect one. Otherwise it is deferral, and deferral has a monthly cost that does not stop.

The other risk is warranty. A car that crosses out of battery cover while you wait becomes materially harder for a buyer to retail, and the price reflects that on the day you finally sell.

The honest recommendation

This matters most on cars with a narrower audience. A Jaguar I-Pace, a Polestar 2 or a Mustang Mach-E will attract a much wider range of offers than a Model 3, simply because fewer buyers are confident about them.

Get real offers before deciding. An estimate tells you what a model is broadly worth; offers tell you what buyers will pay for yours, this week.

It costs nothing, commits you to nothing, and converts the decision from a guess into arithmetic. If the numbers say hold, hold — with better information than you had before.

Questions

Common questions

Is now a bad time to sell an EV?

It depends entirely on the model, the warranty position and where you are in any finance agreement. General market commentary cannot answer it for your car.

Will EV values recover?

Nobody can say reliably. What is certain is that depreciation continues while you wait.

Does it cost anything to find out what mine is worth?

No, and there is no obligation to accept anything.
